What is a final investment decision (FID)?

A final investment decision (FID) is the point where a project's owners formally commit the capital to build it. Before FID, a project is still being designed, permitted and priced. After FID, the owner signs the main construction contracts, places orders for long-lead equipment and starts hiring at scale.

Why it matters if you sell to projects

  • Before FID, spending goes mostly to front-end engineering design (FEED), permitting, consultation and sometimes early works under a limited notice to proceed.
  • At FID, the big EPC or construction-management contracts usually become firm, and subcontract and supply packages follow over the next months.
  • After FID, the schedule is driven by construction, and the next milestones are mechanical completion, commissioning and in-service.

A project can have every permit in hand and still not be built if the owners never take FID. That's why we track FID separately from approvals.
