Indigenous equity partnerships in Western Canada major projects

More and more major projects in Western Canada are partly owned, or majority owned, by First Nations. Under an equity partnership, a nation (or a group of nations) owns a share of the project. It earns a return on that share over the project's life, on top of jobs, contracts and benefit agreements. Government loan-guarantee programs, federal and provincial, help nations borrow to buy their stake.

What it means for contractors

Nation-owned and joint-venture contractors (such as Ledcor Haisla LP on Cedar LNG) often hold the early civil and site packages. Partnering with them is often the way into this work.
